Doug McLaren
Doug McLaren grew up in western Pennsylvania and simply slipped a few miles south to West Virginia University and graduated from their forestry program. He migrated to eastern Kentucky and began working with the Kentucky Division of Forestry before finding his lifelong passion of education. He first taught at the University of Kentucky's Forestry and Wood Technician Program at Quicksand then came to the Lexington campus and made the transition to forestry extension work. He was privileged to provide programs for all ages and subjects related to forestry and natural resources throughout the state. His total professional forestry related work experience was 45 years.
After retiring he has continued to work in the field of natural resources providing programs and learning opportunities to a variety of audiences and program formats. He is president of Kentucky Woodland Owners Association and Kentucky Tree Farm, two organizations that are highly involved in sustainable forestry activities throughout the state. His energies are to promote best management practices in the woodlands throughout Kentucky through both of these programs.
Every time he is with a group of former coworkers or professional associates in the field of natural resources, he always finishes the day by saying, "I love my job! What other job gives you the opportunity of being outside daily."
