John Johnson

Dr. Johnson is an Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Georgetown College. In this capacity he supervises programs in Community Health and Sustainability and Criminal Justice, teaching courses such as Environment and Sustainability; Food, Health, and Environment; Community Resilience and Leadership; and Health, Illness, and Healthcare. His dissertation, titled “The Transition to Resilience: A Case Study of Two Communities,” examined how two communities understood sustainability and resilience and the efforts they are making to increase their social, economic, and environmental resilience in the face of rapidly changing economic and environmental realities. Before and during graduate school, he worked at the Nathaniel Mission, The Living Arts and Science Center, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and the Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy in various capacities, including program management and volunteer coordination, chief operating officer, business manager, and community liaison. Dr. Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree from Malone University and a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary, then went on to earn an MA and PhD in sociology from the University of Kentucky, where his research and teaching focused on organizational and environmental sociology.
