Vanderford, an assistant professor in the Department of Toxicology and Cancer Biology in the UK College of Medicine and assistant director for education and research at the UK Markey Cancer Center, received the award at the KAS Annual Conference on Nov. 6.

Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

Shapiro’s master’s degree thesis was on baseball batting mechanics. Later, during his doctoral dissertation at the University of Illinois, he developed methodology to perform 3D analysis of movement which he applied to baseball batting. 

Chris Crawford, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is the co-leader of a team that just precisely measured the weak interaction between protons and neutrons, also known as the weak force — one of four fundamental forces in nature.

Recently published in PLOS One, the study used Kentucky Cancer Registry patient data from 2007-2011 to identify trends in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation testing and the usage of the EGFR inhibitor, erlotinib.
