The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet and the Kentucky Geological Survey at the University of Kentucky have announced a collaborative project focused on mine methane (CH4) emissions in the state.

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science will hold its 17th Annual Spring Conference on April 5, 2022, focusing on “Climate and Health.” This year’s keynote speaker is Robert Bullard, Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning and Environmental Policy at Texas Southern University.

The Center for Applied Energy Research (CAER) received $1.3 million from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory for development of new carbon capturing technology.

A five-year project improving cost-effective wetland treatment systems for rural communities and low-income areas is the subject of a prestigious National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development award for Tiffany Messer, Ph.D.

The CAER project seeks to solve both of those issues through the development of new high-strength, high-bond cements and concretes that are simple to deploy and use. These products will require little or no surface preparation and eliminate the heavy precast reinforcement-laden structural elements that bog down repair and construction projects.

Crocker, Buland and representatives from the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves toured the Tom Dorman State Nature Preserve in Garrard and Jessamine counties, where there is potential for lingering ash.

"Lake Tanganyika’s fish are a critically important resource for impoverished people from four nations (Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi and Zambia) and resilience to environmental change in that region is quite low,” McGlue said.

Mark Crocker and CAER research scientist Yaying Ji have developed and patented a novel technology that addresses the problem of removing nitrogen oxides (NOx) from exhaust gas when a vehicle is first started and the gas is still cold.
