W. M. Keck Foundation -- Research Programs for Medical Research and for Science and Engineering

W. M. Keck Foundation (2 programs)

  • Research program for medical research
  • Research program for science and engineering

Purpose
The Research Program seeks to benefit humanity by supporting projects in two specific areas (1) medical research and (2) science and engineering that are distinctive and novel in their approachquestion the prevailing paradigm, or have the potential to break open new territory in their field. Past funding has been awarded to major universities, independent research institutions, and medical schools to support pioneering biological and physical science research and engineering, including the development of promising new technologies, instrumentation, or methodologies.

Funding is awarded to universities and institutions nationwide for projects in research that:

  • Focus on important and emerging areas of research
  • Have the potential to develop breakthrough technologies, instrumentation, or methodologies
  • Are innovative, distinctive, and interdisciplinary
  • Demonstrate a high level of risk due to unconventional approaches, or by challenging the prevailing paradigm
  • Have the potential for transformative impact, such as the founding of a new field of research, the enabling of observations not previously possible, or the altered perception of a previously intractable problem
  • Does not focus on clinical or translational research, treatment trials, or research for the sole purpose of drug development
  • Fall outside the mission of public funding agencies
  • Demonstrate that private philanthropy generally, and the W. M. Keck Foundation in particular, is essential to the project’s success

Funding Amount
Funding ranges from $500,000 to $5 million and are typically $2 million or less

Institutional Limit:

  • Research program for medical research
    • UK can discuss four projects with the foundation during pre-application counseling period, but UK can only submit one project at the phase I stage
  • Research program for science and engineering
    • UK can discuss four projects with the foundation during pre-application counseling period, but UK can only submit one project at the phase I stage

Internal Competition
To participate in the University’s selection process, researchers are to submit the following material electronically, assembled in a PDF document, to the Office of the Vice President for Research at limitedsubmissions@uky.edu  with a copy to your Associate Dean for Research by Tuesday, June 6, 2017:

One page, use 12-point font with 1-inch margins

  1. an overview of the proposed project emphasizing any unique aspects and pilot studies (indicate area of emphasis for project - medical research or science and engineering research);
  2. a description of the methodologies and key personnel (distinguish PI/name of applicant);
  3. a brief justification of the need for Keck support (explain why this project can’t be funded by other sources, such as NIH); and
  4. an estimated budget broken down, if possible, by major areas, e.g., personnel, equipment, consumable supplies, etc. (budgets can be rough approximations at this stage).

Avoid illustrations in the one page concept paper—researchers will need all the room for text.  If a reference is necessary, then abbreviate it as (Science, 323, 45, ‘11). DO NOT USE (Jones et al., 2011).

Deadlines: Office of Philanthropy will coordinate concept discussions with Keck between July 1 and August 15. Phase I applications are due November 1.

Process of application:
**Per foundation guidelines, the application process and communication with the foundation will be coordinated by the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR) in the Office of Philanthropy

  • Office of Vice President for Research (VPR) will coordinate selection of internal applicants (up to four projects for medical research and four projects for science and engineering research).
  • CFR will work with faculty to further develop the single page concept papers, and will submit concept papers to Keck along with other materials.
  • CFR and Office of the VPR will coordinate pre-application phone counseling session.
  • Based on Keck Foundation feedback, a maximum of one applicant for medical research and one applicant for science and engineering research will be selected. It is possible that no applicants will be selected.
  • CFR will work with selected applicant(s) to develop and submit phase I proposals.
  • If invited, CFR will work with applicant(s) to develop and submit phase II proposals, and coordinate site visits and/or conference calls.
