The University of Kentucky was ranked in the Top 100 U.S. Universities Granted Utility Patents in 2023 by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

The list uses calendar year data provided by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to highlight universities that play a large role in advancing innovation and invention across the country. The full report can be found here.

A member institution of the NAI, UK ranked 58th along with one other institution, with 33 U.S. utility patents granted in 2023. UK filed 161 patent applications and held 930 worldwide patent assets in fiscal year 2023.

“As we look at the current and future state of innovation in our nation, we need to ensure that the U.S. is remaining competitive in the international innovation ecosystem,” said Paul R. Sanberg, president of the NAI. “Protecting intellectual property is a key component to this, and the Top 100 U.S. Universities list allows us to recognize and celebrate universities and their faculty, staff and students who are not only innovating at high levels but taking the additional step of protecting their IP (intellectual property) through patenting.”

This is the second year the NAI has published the Top 100 U.S. Universities ranking, which serves as a complement to the Top 100 Worldwide Universities list. UK ranked 99th on that list.
