New Horizons: The 2013 High School Wing Design Competition
In May 2013 the third annual Kentucky High School Wing Design Competition kicked off with twenty-six teams from twelve different schools arriving at a regional airport with their wings to compete.
Sponsored by the Institute of Aerospace Education and NASA KY this statewide competition is a unique program that helps high school students learn about career pathways in aerospace. The competition requires each team to design and build a wing to be flown on a remote controlled airplane. Through the competition students learn teamwork and decision-making along with math and science.
The day of the competition is an exciting event as the students watch nervously to see if their wings will fly or crash. While the gratification of seeing their work in action is important, the real success comes from the students gaining new experiences and perspectives.
