The major function of the Analytical Chemistry Core for Environmental ScienceS (ACCESS) is to provide support for chemical analysis of environmental and biological samples for toxicants, biomarkers of effect, and other analytes related to environmental health science research. Support includes advice on selection of analytical methods, sample collection, preservation and storage techniques, and advice on quality assessment and quality control. The core also provides analysis of trace-elements, including trace-element speciation and atomic imaging and spectroscopy as well as analysis of major anions and cations and volatile organic compounds through the Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory (ECTL) at UK. For other analyses, such as for small molecules, ACCESS provides vouchers for provision of analyses at the UK Proteomics and Mass Spectrometry Core Facility or at other analytical laboratories.
The Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory is in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture Food and Environment. The laboratory focuses on advanced methods in trace-element analysis and speciation, atomic imaging, volatile organic compounds, and analysis and characterization of nanomaterials and colloids. The laboratory is under the direction of ACCESS core lead, Prof. Jason Unrine. Analyses in this laboratory are subsidized by ACCESS for UK-CARES members performing environmental health research. For analyses for non-UK users, please contact Jason Unrine for more information.

The University of Kentucky Office of the Vice President of Research operates the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Core Facility. This facility can provide analysis of organic compounds using LC-MS/MS techniques as well as proteomics analysis. The facility is under the direction of Dr. Abigail Burrows Franco and is operated as a fee-for-service center. ACCESS subsidizes services in this facility for UK-CARES members through our voucher program. Users interested in using this facility should contact the Dr. Abigail Burrows Franco directly.
