Advance Planning for Animal Research Space

To support the successful onboarding of new faculty and ensure the timely launch of animal research programs, the Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) requests that departments submit a DLAR Space Request for all faculty recruits whose research activities will require animal housing or other DLAR-managed research space.

Submitting this request at or before the time an offer letter is extended enables DLAR to proactively assess space availability, evaluate facility needs, and coordinate resources to support incoming faculty member's research program. Early planning also enhances the University's ability to strategically manage and optimize animal research space across campus.

Purpose

The DLAR Space Request process is designed to:

  • Facilitate early planning for faculty members whose research requires DLAR-managed space.
  • Evaluate current space availability and identify future capacity needs.
  • Support strategic allocation and utilization of animal research facilities.
  • Coordinate facility, operational, and infrastructure requirements prior to a faculty member's arrival.
  • Minimize delays in establishing new research programs and initiating research activities.

Who Should Submit a Request?

A DLAR Space Request should be completed by the hiring department chair or designated representative for all prospective or newly hired faculty members whose research program is expected to involve vertebrate animal research requiring DLAR-managed space.

To ensure adequate planning, requests should be submitted as early as possible in the recruitment process, preferably before or concurrent with the issuance of an offer letter.

Information Collected

The request form gathers preliminary information to assist DLAR in evaluating research space needs, including:

  • Faculty information (name, email, anticipated start date)
  • Hiring department and college
  • Animal Biosafety Level
  • Animal species and projected housing requirements
  • Estimated space and facility needs
  • Specialized equipment or operational considerations

The information provided is used for planning purposes and does not constitute a formal assignment or guarantee of research space. Final space allocations will be determined in coordination with DLAR and University leadership based on institutional priorities, operational requirements, and available capacity.
