C. Arden Pope, III, is a Professor of Economics and Karl G. Maeser Distinguished University Professor, Emeritus, at Brigham Young University. He received a PhD from Iowa State University, was a Fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, and an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Douglas W. Dockery is the John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Research Professor of Environmental and Epidemiology, Emeritus, at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. He directed the Harvard—NIEHS Center for Environmental Health Sciences and Chaired the Department of Environmental Health.

Drs. Pope and Dockery have spent over four decades conducting and collaborating on seminal studies on the health effects of air pollution. They have advised numerous scientific boards and committees and received multiple research and teaching awards. Recently, they co-authored a remarkable book, Particles of Truth: A Story of Discovery, Controversy, and the Fight for Healthy Air (MIT Press, 2025). This book presents a compelling story of air pollution science, documenting the substantial public health benefits of clean, healthy air. The book also addresses persistent efforts to cast doubt on air pollution research and discredit public policy initiatives aimed at protecting air quality.

Expert Panel Discussion

We are excited to feature an interactive panel discussion exploring today’s most critical environmental and health challenges. This session brings together a unique cross-section of voices – including a state government official, a research scientist, and a community member. Following the discussion, we will open the floor for audience Q&A.

Technology Fair

Tech Fair

The interactive Technology Fair will provide attendees with a hands-on opportunity to explore a range of air pollution monitoring technologies and related tools. The fair will feature displays and live demonstrations of instruments used to measure air quality across different settings, from personal and indoor monitoring to community and research-grade applications.

By creating an engaging space for participants to interact directly with the equipment, ask questions, and learn about the strengths and limitations of different monitoring approaches, the Tech Fair will help bridge science, technology, and public health practice while fostering dialogue among researchers, students, community partners, and practitioners.

Dr. John P. Wyatt

John P. Wyatt, M.D.

John P. Wyatt, M.D., was a distinguished Canadian-American pathologist renowned for his pioneering work in pulmonary anatomy and pathology, particularly in advancing the understanding of emphysema, air pollution-related lung disease, and tobacco's impact on respiratory health.

He earned his M.D. from the University of Manitoba in 1939, became a Fellow in Pathology at the University of Toronto until 1941, and completed further training as a Littauer Fellow in Pathology at Harvard Medical School. After serving in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps during WWII, he held academic and clinical positions including professor and head of pathology at St. Louis University (1949–1964), where he conducted research on black lung disease, and professor and head of pathology at the University of Manitoba (1964–1974).

In 1974, he joined the University of Kentucky in Lexington, serving as director of the UK Tobacco and Health Research Institute until 1980. There he focused on environmental influences on lung health.

Wyatt provided the first description of panlobular emphysema and made major contributions to understanding centrilobular emphysema, lung injury and repair, and the links between air pollution and respiratory disease. He published over 100 articles and established a productive experimental lung pathology group that advanced knowledge of alveolar repair mechanisms.

His legacy is honored through the annual John P. Wyatt, M.D., Environment and Health Symposium at the University of Kentucky, which was established and is made possible by the continued generosity of the Wyatt family. The symposium recognizes his groundbreaking work connecting environmental exposures to lung pathology.
