Researchers at the University of Kentucky play a pivotal role in finding solutions to meet the needs of the Commonwealth and the nation.

Much of that work to advance science is done with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Isabel Escobar, Ph.D., is the Paul W. Chellgren Endowed Chair and director of the Chellgren Center for Undergraduate Excellence. She is also a professor of chemical and materials engineering in the UK Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering

With significant support from the U.S. NSF and DOE, Escobar’s research focuses on modifying membranes at the nanoscale. This work is rooted in problem-solving — finding solutions for water treatment, energy, recycling electronic waste and more.

“This support has allowed UK to be a leader in developing new membrane materials, with collaborators across the U.S., and we are working to scale up membrane production,” said Escobar. “Our goal is to continue to find ways for our faculty — with different capabilities and expertise — to come together and address difficult research questions.”

Escobar and other members of our research community shared the importance of this federally funded research at UK. Learn more about the impactful work done in this video series from Research Communications.
