Research Advancing Kentucky: Offering a future beyond addiction
Researchers at the University of Kentucky play an important role in advancing the health, well-being and future of our Commonwealth.
Much of that work is done with support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). That support allows our researchers to find answers to many of the critical health issues facing Kentuckians.
William Stoops, Ph.D., is supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which aims to advance science on drug use and addiction prevention, and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences.
Stoops is the associate vice president for research integrity and a professor in the Department of Behavioral Science in the UK College of Medicine. He holds joint appointments in psychiatry and psychology.
With a focus on the evaluation of behavioral and pharmacological factors, Stoops’ research aims to investigate the mechanisms underlying substance use disorders, drug use and addiction in individuals, with an emphasis on stimulants, opioids and alcohol.
“Having access to NIH-funded infrastructure and centers at UK allows me to do work that is impossible pretty much anywhere else,” said Stoops. “I hope that UK continues on its steeply upward research trajectory, especially in the area of addiction research, so that we can identify the best possible ways to prevent and treat the problems that plague our state by tapping into the best and brightest minds the university has to offer.”
Stoops and other members of the research community shared the importance of NIH-funded research at UK in this video series from Research Communications.
