Researchers at the University of Kentucky play an important role in advancing the health, well-being and future of our Commonwealth.

Much of that work is done with support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). That support allows our researchers to find answers to many of the critical health issues facing Kentuckians.

Katherine Hartmann, M.D., Ph.D., is the director of the UK Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the UK College of Medicine.

CCTS’ goal is to deliver solutions for researchers across UK’s 16 colleges and UK HealthCare. It is currently funded by a prestigious award from the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS).

From connecting researchers to needed resources, to pilot funding and training programs, to the expertise at UK’s core facilities ready to find innovative approaches to research, CCTS offers a variety of supports.

“All of these services, and more, are possible thanks to the support we receive from the National Institutes of Health and the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences,” said Hartmann. “This funding also gives us unique, national collaborations that enhance our reach across the Commonwealth and beyond.”

As a physician-scientist, Hartmann has years of expertise with research involving large community-recruited cohorts, behavioral interventions and clinical trials. Her work includes groundbreaking results that have answered key questions for women’s health during pregnancy.

Hartmann and other members of the research community shared the importance of NIH-funded research at UK in this video series from Research Communications.
