Attendees at the NSF Access Regional AI Workshop

The University of Kentucky’s Center for Computational Sciences (CCS), with support from the NSF ACCESS Support project (NSF grant OAC- #2138286), hosted a two-day Regional AI Workshop on October 7–8 at the Gatton Student Center.

The workshop focused on the practical adoption of artificial intelligence in higher education. Topics included the use of AI in research, classroom instruction, research applications, and strategies for establishing guidelines for responsible use. The event was co-facilitated by the Center for Applied AI (CAAI), which led the research-focused sessions, and the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT), which led the educational components.

Interest in the workshop far exceeded available capacity, reflecting strong regional demand for professional development and collaboration around AI. Participants represented a broad cross-section of colleges, universities, and organizations from across Kentucky and neighboring states.

One session that generated notable discussion featured a panel of Honors 151 undergraduate students who described their experiences with AI in the classroom. Students shared perspectives on how AI tools affect coursework, group collaboration, and communication with instructors. The panel highlighted the need for clear expectations and ethical guidelines around AI use in academic settings.

The workshop was part of a series of regional events supported by the NSF ACCESS Support project, designed to promote AI literacy and engagement within the research and education community. Pre-event surveys identified “AI in Research and Education” as a top regional interest, which shaped the program’s design.

“AI is becoming commonplace, making it all the more important that we understand how to use it effectively while managing its risks,” said Jim Griffioen, Director of the Center for Computational Sciences. “Workshops like this help researchers and educators explore the potential of AI and how it can be applied productively, while also raising awareness of the challenges that come with it.”
