UK’s Bhattacharyya Wins SEC Faculty Achievement Award

Bhattacharyya has been a fixture in UK Engineering for more than 50 years and is renowned for his research, which focuses on incorporating life sciences materials with synthetic membranes for filtering and producing clean water. As the director of UK’s Center of Membrane Sciences, he is also contributing his decades of expertise to help address the spread of COVID-19.

“Professor Zeadally has built a strong scholarly reputation among his colleagues. His work is cited regularly regarding his areas of expertise,” said Jeffrey Huber, director of the School of Information Science.

UK Mathematics’ Stapleton Named Sloan Research Fellow

Stapleton is one of 128 researchers across the U.S. and Canada “whose creativity, innovation and research accomplishments make them stand out as the next generation of scientific leaders,” according to the foundation.

Gary Ferland Named American Astronomical Society Fellow

Ferland was honored for his work in developing and applying “Cloudy,” a special computer code that studies how light from distant celestial bodies is produced. “This award is a great honor, and is as much to UK as to me,” Ferland said.

2 UK-supported Programs Awarded for Creating Inclusive Research and Innovation

Two programs fostered by the University of Kentucky Office for Technology Commercialization (OTC) have been awarded by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the National Science and Technology Council for creating “a more inclusive research and development innovation ecosystem for the future.”

Undergraduate Researchers Receive Oswald Research and Creativity Awards

Awards in each category are: First Place: $350; Second Place: $200; and Honorable Mention, if applicable. Entries are judged on originality, clarity of expression, scholarly or artistic contribution, and the validity, scope and depth of the project or investigation.

5-Minute Fast Track Competition Winners Announced

Cultivating students’ presentation and research communication skills, competitors were challenged to present their research in five minutes, using only one static slide, in front of a panel of three judges and a virtual audience.

Thaddeus Salmon named 2020-21 Bell Addiction Medicine Scholar

“I’m looking forward to enhancing screening and management of substance use disorders in our primary care practice at the Polk-Dalton Clinic. This will increase access to treatment for many patients, and we will also be able to improve education for our medical students and residents who rotate through the clinic.”
