Summary

The Associate Vice President for Research Integrity (AVP-RI), reporting to the University of Kentucky Vice President for Research (VPR), provides strategic leadership, oversight, resources and education for research compliance across Human Subjects, Animal Subjects and Clinical Research at UK. Working closely with the Office of Legal Counsel, UK HealthCare, other AVPRs and leaders across the research enterprise, the AVP-RI advises the VPR on research operations and integrity; ensures effective, compliant and seamless research integrity functions; and strengthens a culture of responsible, agile and forward-looking research. The AVP-RI helps position UK to grow and support more complex clinical trials, animal-based research programs and related opportunities by increasing the efficiency, responsiveness and capacity of research integrity operations. The position provides 30% effort coverage and an administrative stipend.

Duties

The AVP-RI is a senior executive officer reporting to the VPR and responsible for advancing research success by ensuring consistent, efficient and compliant research operations. The AVP-RI provides administrative leadership and oversight for research integrity functions and partners with the VPR, other AVPRs, research office leaders, colleges, centers and institutes, university administration and UK HealthCare to execute strategic plans that strengthen research operations and expand UK’s capacity in both animal and human subject research. A central goal is to streamline research integrity processes so UK can recruit and support larger and more ambitious clinical trials, animal-based research programs and related opportunities. The AVP-RI will anticipate evolving regulations, guide the leadership of ORI, CRSO, Office of the Attending Veterinarian and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and support the IACUC chair in advancing well-resourced, efficient animal research review processes that enable responsible growth.

Duties generally include:

• Guide ORI, CRSO, Office of the Attending Veterinarian, and IACUC in strategic planning, efficient operations, performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
• Support the IACUC chair in streamlining animal research processes, increasing review efficiency and building the resources needed to expand UK’s animal-based research capacity.
• Serve as a faculty liaison to unit leadership to improve processes, procedures, policies and problem-solving.
• Provide the VPR with relevant staffing, operations and performance data and lead or support formal unit reviews at the VPR’s direction.
• Collaborate with Associate Deans for Research, center and institute directors and university leaders to advance UK’s research mission and strengthen research integrity operations.
• Assist the VPR to:
  • Develop strategic initiatives.
  • Responsibly managing assets and improving operational efficiencies.
  • Implement short- and long-term plans for continuous improvement across campus.

Qualifications

• Tenured faculty member at the University of Kentucky.
• Demonstrated success in extramurally funded research or scholarship.
• Broad understanding of research approaches, disciplines, integrity standards and applicable government regulations.
• Experience leading research integrity, compliance, administration, operations or related functions.
• Proven ability to work effectively across colleges, centers, institutes, departments and administrative units.
• Experience supervising staff and supporting high-performing teams in research or operational environments.
• Strong communication, mentoring, collaboration and trust-building skills.
• Leadership experience at the department, center, institute, college or university level, including strategic planning, budget management, program evaluation, assessment and training development.
• Ability to analyze complex operations, develop operating plans, improve processes and create efficiencies in a thoughtful and decisive manner.
• Visionary, growth-oriented leadership with the ability to expand UK’s research enterprise, build research capacity and pursue emerging opportunities.
