New Associate Vice President for Research Integrity

Dr. William Stoops

We are pleased to announce that William W. Stoops, Ph.D., has been named Associate Vice President for Research Integrity (AVP-RI), a new position reporting to the Vice President for Research (VPR). He will assume the role immediately.  

The AVP-RI will provide leadership, oversight and education for compliance issues relating to the conduct of research at UK, in areas including human subjects, animals subjects, export control, research security, international engagement and conflict of interest.  

Dr. Stoops is the Dr. William R. Willard Professor in Behavioral Science, with appointments in the departments of Behavioral Science, Psychiatry and Psychology, as well as the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research (CDAR). He is the founding director of the Clinical Research Support Office (CRSO), director of the Regulatory Knowledge and Support Core in the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) and associate director for clinical research in the Substance Use Research Priority Area (SUPRA).  

As a principal investigator, he has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2008. His research focuses on advancing novel substance use disorder treatments. A translational researcher with active collaborations ranging from preclinical to epidemiological research, Dr. Stoops has expertise in regulatory aspects of clinical research including investigational new drug (IND) submission and protection of human subjects. 

He was named a University Research Professor and College of Medicine Vision Awardee, received a presidential citation in 2021 from the American Psychological Association and was named 2024 Kentucky Psychological Association Researcher of the Year. He is past president and current treasurer of College on Problems of Drug Dependence, the oldest and largest scientific society dedicated to addiction research.
