Research Advancing Kentucky: Groppo’s focus on critical material recovery
Researchers at the University of Kentucky play a pivotal role in finding solutions to meet the needs of the Commonwealth and the nation.
Much of that work to advance science is done with funding from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Jack Groppo, Ph.D., is the director of undergraduate studies and a professor in the Department of Mining Engineering in the UK Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. He is also a research professor at the UK Center for Applied Energy Research.
He is an expert in recovering critical materials from electronic and coal waste. Funding from these agencies has allowed Groppo to find these new methods to build up the supply chain for tomorrow’s electronics.
“Our research is focused on UK’s priority research areas pertaining to energy and critical materials,” said Groppo. “The goal is to develop a critical materials industry supply chain that recovers critical metals by recycling waste streams and refines them to high purity so they can be used to manufacture products essential for national defense and energy technology.”
Groppo and other members of our research community shared the importance of this federally funded research at UK. Learn more about the impactful work done in this video series from Research Communications.
