Annual Research Security Training Required for Federally Funded Research

Researchers participating in federally funded research may be required to complete Research Security Training annually and prior to proposal submission, depending on sponsor requirements. UK satisfies this requirement through CITI using the “Research Security Training (Combined)” and the “Research Security Training (Combined) Refresher” modules. This training addresses research security concerns including foreign influence, disclosure requirements, conflicts of interest and commitment, international collaboration and cybersecurity.

NSF, NIH, DOE, USDA and NASA require research security training, and the training must be completed within 12 months of proposal submission. USDA’s requirements are broader than other agencies and may extend beyond senior or key personnel to designated covered individuals involved in a project including staff, postdocs and graduate students. The DOD has also indicated it will require research security training but has not yet announced an implementation date.
