New Streamlined NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan in Effect
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) now requires applicants to use the 2026 Pilot DMS Plan format to submit the required Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan for any NIH-funded or conducted research that generates scientific data. This streamlined format is effective for applications submitted on or after May 25, 2026. Importantly, NIH continues the requirement to share data but in simplified format. The DMS Plan structure requires less detail but general assent to sharing scientific data. Applicants will answer the following “Yes/No” questions:
- Will there be maximum appropriate sharing of scientific data underlying peer-reviewed publications and other findings resulting from the work supported by this award (including preprints, refereed papers reported at conferences and other findings)?
- Will the scientific data underlying peer-reviewed publications be shared by the time of publication, or for other findings, by the end of the period of performance, which includes no-cost extensions?
- If data derived from human research participants will be shared, will privacy, rights and confidentiality be protected as outlined in NOT-OD-22-213?
Any “No” responses will require explanation. Applicants will have space for a 100-word description of key types of data anticipated to be generated and to identify established repositories to be used for preserving and sharing data.
