NSF Implements New Data Management and Sharing Plan Tool

On April 27, U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) released and implemented a new tool in Research.gov for submitting the Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP) that is required in each proposal. This change was announced in Supplement 2 to the Proposals and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG 24-1). The new form requires principal investigators (PIs) to first list each Data or Research Product Category that will come from the research project. The guidelines stipulate that it is sufficient to specify each high-level category of data. Each dataset or type of data does not need to receive its own entry. For each data category identified, the form includes seven prompts for PIs to address:  

• Access Policies and Limitations
• Data Standards and Metadata
• Data or Research Product Provenance
• Public Archiving  
• Timeline for Public Accessibility
• Data Availability
• Accountability
