UK SAVS, Dance and Interiors collaborate to perform 'Materialized'
The University of Kentucky’s School of Art and Visual Studies (SA/VS) will join the Department of Theatre and Dance to present “Materialized,” a free, collaborative dance project beginning 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, and 2 p.m. Saturday, April 15, in the atrium of the School of Art and Visual Studies building, located at 236 Bolivar St.
“The experience in building this project across disciplines of art, design and dance has been a rich one. Our hope is to continue to bridge the schools and departments together to provide a rich experience for our students, faculty and community through performance and viewings,” said Crystal Gregory, associate professor in SA/VS.
This semester, Gregory’s fiber students and UK College of Design Assistant Professor Hannah Dewhirst’s graduate interiors students have been working with choreography dance majors to develop a sculptural installation that will be activated through movement in the annual Student Choreography Dance Concert “Materialized.”
“In addition to traditional dance performances, the Dance Program seeks collaborative projects in unconventional and new spaces and places,” said Susie Thiel, associate professor and director of dance. “We are enthusiastic to examine barriers and boundaries, investigating the unknown, and advance assumptions about performance and process. A vibrant creative research community has been cultivated by working with the soft sculpture and graduate interiors students and faculty.”
“Materialized” is free and open to the public.
