The Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS) at the University of Kentucky will host its 61st annual seminar on Thursday, May 12. The event is expected to draw interest from disciplines including geology, geography, environmental sciences, forestry, public health, computer science and statistics.

The seminar will be held in-person only at the Jacobs Science Building on the UK campus from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The event is free but registration is required.

This year’s seminar theme is “Climate Change in Kentucky: A Geoscience Perspective.” General topics will include methane emissions, critical minerals, using Google Earth for statewide remote sensing analyses, soil health and landscape evolution.

Presenting KGS experts will be joined by Morehead State University Assistant Professor of Middle Grades and Secondary Education David Long, Ph.D., UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment Associate Professor Wei Ren, Ph.D., and Stacy Woods, Ph.D., with Yale University’s Carbon Containment Lab. UK College of Arts and Sciences Assistant Professor Lauren Cagle, Ph.D., will also give an update on the Kentucky Climate Consortium.

In addition to oral presentations, the seminar will include a poster session featuring KGS research and associated lightning talks.
