2024 Wendell H. Ford Lecture: Douglas Brinkley

Presidential historian and noted author Douglas Brinkley will be the featured speaker at the University of Kentucky's 2024 Wendell H. Ford Public Policy Lecture at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 8 at the Singletary Center for the Arts. The lecture is hosted by UK's Martin School of Public Policy and Administration, and co-sponsored by UK Libraries and the College of Communication and Information.  It is free and open to the public.

Getting Started with AI at UK with the Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence

The Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence, UK’s own hub of AI expertise, works with students and researchers across disciplines to develop innovative uses of AI tools. As part of The Stacks AI Literacy Week, this session will cover some of CAAI’s core research areas, newly released self-service tools, and opportunities to get involved with their work.

SUPRA Rising Stars Symposium

SUPRA is sponsoring an inaugural Rising Stars Symposium, to be held October 8, 2024 from 8 AM until 1 PM in the Gatton Student Center. It will feature three early career addiction researchers from across the country who will share their novel and exciting findings with us, as well as a networking lunch. Check-in and breakfast will begin at 8 AM in 330AB with the Rising Stars Symposium from 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM. The symposium will be followed by a networking lunch from 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM in the Harris Ballroom.

The Promises and Pitfalls of Artificial Intelligence: How Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Can Change the Work We Perform

Over the last two years, there has been a staggering increase in the number of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems available for public use. One could say that we are currently in the midst of a golden age of AI. While these tools are powerful and can change how we interface with technology, they are often misunderstood and misused. This is often because these tools are typically used as a black box in which users do not understand how the underlying ML or AI system is making decisions.

Clinical Research Coordinator 101

This blended-learning training session is designed for clinical research coordinators, clinical research associates, or staff members who function in this capacity.     This course provides basic information on coordinating clinical trials at the University of Kentucky and is appropriate for entry level positions or those new to the field. Because this training is designed as an entry level program, it does not provide continuing education credit. There will be no fee charged to employees of the University of Kentucky.

Join us for the second installment of the R Workshop Series, where the focus will be on cleaning data in R. You will learn how to import data, extract information from data frames/tibbles, subset data, how to use factors, format dates, and more. Participation in the first installment of the R Workshop Series, Intro to R, or a working knowledge of R/RStudio is highly recommended.    

Coffee Science Unfiltered Session 2: So, What Does Coffee Quality Have to Do With Equity?

Dr. David Gonthier, Director of the UK Coffee Lab, a Coffee Q-Grader and Associate Professor at the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment will share insights from his coffee farming adventures in Honduras and his exploration of the specialty coffee market. He will guide attendees through a brief coffee tasting experience and discuss whether specialty coffee provides opportunities and equity to producers within the global coffee trade.
